Pouring rain and a Friday evening timing did not deter the rasikas who came in large numbers for Sanjay Subrahmanyan's masterly three hour concert at Shruti Laya. Accompanied by Varadarajan on the violin, and Neyveli Venkatesh on the mridangam, Sanjay Subrahmanyan kept the audience spell bound with one stunning piece after the other.
Beginning with the rather unusual Muthiah Bhagavatar varnam "Manamohana", Sanjay kept up a brisk pace with "maamavasadaa janani" with a few rounds of swaras. He then launched into a delicate Harikambhoji composition "Vinathasutha vaahanudai vedalenu kaanchi varadudu" with neraval at "neravaisaakotsavamuna". The rare Thyagaraja composition "ennadu joothuno inakula tilakaa", dripping with pathos, was a short piece before beginning the main ragam of the evening, Bhairavi. The elaborate and beautiful alapana did full justice to the many moods of this ragam, and was followed by the krithi "Thaye Ezhaipaal Dayai Seivaye". Neraval was at the line "yennada yennamellam yenni yenni, yettaada peraasai kottai katti". The Ragam Tanam Pallavi in the ragam Hamsaanandi was interesting in its choice of the pallavi, the first line of the Bharatiyar song "Ninnaye rathi yendru ninaikiren adi kannamma" in Bhageshri. Sanjay then connected it up by singing the ragamalika swaras in Dvijaavanthi, followed by Bhageshri, and then finished it off with the entire song! A few short pieces brought the concert to a conclusion all too soon.
The extraordinary support from Varadarajan on the violin and Neyveli Venkatesh on
the mridangam greatly enhanced the concert experience. The energy and good humor of a Sanjay Concert were in evidence everywhere - from the heavily emphasised "aDi" in the pallavi for the mridangam to the humorous apology "perasai" when an attempted bhriga in the Bhairavi neraval fell short!
The long standing ovation testified to the house-full audience's joy at the concert. All in all, it was an extremely satisfying conclusion to Shruti Laya's 2009 season.
Shruti Laya once again thanks all its members and patrons who made this concert and this entire season a grand success. We would also like to thank all the volunteers who make these events possible by setting up and taking down the equipment, manning the front desk and the myriad other tasks that go into a smooth running performance. Look forward to seeing you all at our events next year!
